So, John and I went to see The Brothers Grimm on Sunday night.  It was....interesting.  You could definitely tell that it was a Terry Gilliam movie (good and bad), but overall it was a good concept.  The little homages to various fairy tales (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, even Princess and the Pea) were worked in remarkably well.  It seemed like a root tale from which all of the fairy tales we know today sprang from.  The only two that freaked me out were the gingerbread man (who I thought was the tar-baby from the Uncle Remus story at first), which was just freaky and wrong and then it took the kid's eyes and nose and mouth....*shudder*  It was just wrong.  And the other one was the freaky horse-eating-the-little-girl thing.  It was obviously supposed to be a Red Riding Hood homage, with the "What big eyes/ears/mouth you have?" but with the bugs and the web and the horse swallowing the little girl whole....EWWWW.

That was my other complaint.  Way way too many creepy-crawlies for my taste.  Okay, Terry, I get it.  Maggots and cockroaches and god knows what else all crawling and squirming and....eeeeuuuchh.  I did enjoy Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as the brothers, though.  I think my favorite part is when they're lying in the forest and the trees are all moving and Matt Damon's character refuses to believe that there could actually be an enchantment, so he's all, "They must be on tracks!  Or...a pulley system!"  That was great.

So, overall: good idea, original storylines, good writing, not-so-great execution.  Which is pretty much what I expected.  Now I have to compile my copious notes on the Gilmore Girls premiere last night!  Tootles!
