Wicked: the movie?
Jul. 16th, 2008 10:28 amSo, I read yesterday that a movie version of Wicked is in the works. While I'm alternately excited and apprehensive about that, it made me think of something else. Other musicals that don't have movie versions that I would buy on DVD and watch over and over. It's no replacement for going to the theater, but I'd still do both!
So here, I give you my top five movie musical wish list (in no particular order):
1. Chess
Not the American (Broadway) version, though. The original London 'concept' version with characters simply called "The American" and "The Russian". You know, as long as I'm dreaming...
2. Les Miserables
Yeah, the whole non-singing "based on the novel" movie? So not worth it. I need singing! Plus, no Eponine in that movie. And I love Eponine. This album (the original Broadway cast recording) has been used by my family to break in every new stereo system they own. Just like Star Wars breaks in every new TV.
Ooh...this'll work for now, though. WANT. *drool*
3. Miss Saigon
I've never actually seen this on stage, but I've listened to the soundtrack approximately 80 billion times. Plus, when you're making a movie you don't have to worry about getting a full-size helicopter on stage!
4. Ragtime
When I saw this show in San Francisco, I'd never heard of it (or the book). But it was a very powerful experience and a great show.
5. The Secret Garden
This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I've never seen a really satisfactory movie version. I did go see the musical in San Francisco, and it was absolutely perfect. "Hold On" and "Wick" are staggeringly powerful songs and the way they interpret the story is beautiful.
Of course, if I have to choose between a bad movie version and no movie version, I'd rather not have the movie and just listen to the music again and again.
