megotelek: (sweeney todd)
So. We went to see Sweeney Todd on Saturday night, and it was spectacular. Starring Mark Jacoby as Sweeney, and Mary Gordon Murray as Mrs. Lovett.

The "in the round" part was interesting; the set with the barbershop and the chair was sort of behind us and to the left, so whenever the action was there, we had to crane our necks a bit. But overall, it worked very well, with the company coming up the aisles singing "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and the madhouse lunatics running throughout the theater during "City on Fire".

I like the Music Circus theater; it always makes you feel like you're part of the show - of course, Les Miserables was the most memorable instance of this, where during the barricade scenes they fired straight out "into" the audience.

Both leads were fantastic (and really, how could they not be? The almost original Phantom as Sweeney Todd? Brilliant!). Murray in particular was wonderful as Mrs. Lovett - she really threw herself into the part and made it look effortless. And with Sondheim's music? That's not an easy thing to do at all. In my opinion, "The Worst Pies in London" and "By the Sea" are two of the hardest songs in the show. And she carried them off beautifully.

Next up - My Fair Lady on August 9, and Hairspray on August 23! I've never seen either performed on stage, so this should be interesting!
