somewhere over the (reading) rainbow
Aug. 28th, 2009 07:23 pmAfter twenty-six years, Reading Rainbow is going off the air. Apparently teaching kids how to read is more important than teaching them the love of reading, according to the powers that be.
That's just sad. I learned to read when I was very young (honestly, I don't remember not being able to read) and I watched Reading Rainbow religiously. I loved the show, partly because it exposed me to new books, and partly because it was hosted byGeordi LaForge LeVar Burton. I also watched Star Trek: TNG religiously...
Which is why I remember one episode of Reading Rainbow in particular:
Linda Simensky, vice president for children’s programming at PBS explained that PBS felt that the mechanics of reading, not teaching the love of reading, should be the priority. “We’ve been able to identify the earliest steps that we need to take,” she said. “Now we know what we need to do first. Even just from five years ago, I think we all know so much more about how to use television to teach.”
