Ugh...I finally got what everyone's been coming down with - headache/sore throat/fever/congestion fun.
In other news, John & I went to see Sweeney Todd on Sunday...now, I wasn't familiar with the stage show at all, so I didn't have anything to compare it to. Having said that...
I loved it. Absolutely loved it. A reviewer called the last shot "appallingly gorgeous" - I think that pretty much sums up the whole movie. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter can sing just fine, and I think some of the...raw nature of their voices makes them even more perfect for these roles.
Plus, I was thrilled to see none other than Anthony Stewart Head (Giles from Buffy) in a really quick, blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo exchanging a few lines with Johnny Depp. I think I actually popped up in my seat in the theater with an audible, "Giles!" John laughed at me.
It's definitely not for the young or the faint-of-heart -- lots and lots of fake blood & gore. And, well, it's not exactly an uplifting story...
But it is horribly beautiful, especially as envisioned by Tim Burton. Now, I know a lot of the music was cut down and some was cut out completely, but I liked that there weren't any big chorus numbers in the movie. It made it feel like a much more intimate story, which (I think) works better in film than it would in the theater.
Well, it's raining again. I hope my Buffy comics come today...I have #8, #9 and #10 coming...then I have to wait until February for the next one. How sad!
