why, internets? why?
Oct. 17th, 2008 03:22 pmOk, Mythbusters ranting coming up. Some of it kind of overdue.
The 'fainting goats' segment from the first or second episode this season. How is that a myth? Also, they completely ignored the fact that goats started to be bred for this trait specifically so that they could put fainting goats in with a flock of sheep. When wolves went for the flock, the goats would faint and the wolves would go for them, rather than the sheep. Live bait, if you will. I would think that would be interesting enough to put in the show -- you know, how they used to talk to experts? Folklorists? Anyone? Bueller? (No, "goat fancier" doesn't count) But still, they did a really really sloppy job of researching this one.
The build team. Lately, I've come across people who haven't seen the first few seasons of the show and have wondered if it's "as good" without the build team. If you ask me, it was ten billion times better without the build team and we don't need them now! They are so sloppy when they test their myths and there has been more than one occasion where I came up with a bunch of variations or test parameters they should have included (like a CONTROL on one of them, for cripes sake! Scientific method, anyone?). I know it's more "entertainment" than "science" now, but at least Jamie and Adam used to explain why experimental procedures were important, and so on.
I don't mind having a build team that interacts with Jamie and Adam, but I don't think they should get their own segments. Clearly, the internets do not agree with me. But I think Jamie and Adam deserve center stage for the whole show, and then they can have "supporting" players as needed to test the myths.
Grr. Maybe I need to stop watching the show now and get the first few seasons on DVD.
