Ok, so I just finished reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, which is the book that supposedly inspired the movie Blade Runner.

Why do I say supposedly? Because...well, let me put it this way. I really want to see a movie based on this book! Because Blade Runner wasn't it.

Things in the movie that are also in the book:

*Main character's name is Rick Deckard.

*Main character's job is to "retire" humanoid robots on Earth, which can be identified using an empathy test.

*Main character "retires" several humanoid robots on Earth.

That's it. The movie makes up an entire plot for the robots ("replicants" in the movie, "androids" or "andys" in the book - the term "blade runner" isn't in the book at all) that isn't in the book.

Cut in case you haven't read the book and want to - spoilers! )

The book just had so many layers and levels and on one hand, it's a typical sci-fi action adventure story, and on the other hand, it's a discussion of what makes us unique as humans and whether or not we could lose that identity.

I think that, especially today, a movie actually based on this book would do well. We've reached such a technological age that these questions are more relevant and timely than ever.

And, for you Blade Runner fans out there, I'm not knocking the movie. I just don't think it was what a movie of this book could be.

So...after I had the killer flu back in February, the cough hung around for a couple of weeks. Okay, that's pretty normal, from what I hear. But Wednesday night at Schola rehearsal, about halfway through rehearsal I started to overheat and get all disoriented. I couldn't hold any notes, either, so I had to basically read along while everyone else sang.

I went home after rehearsal and took my temperature....yup, 100.6. Crap! So I went to the doctor on Thursday morning and he said that since my immune system was weakened from the first flu, I had apparently picked up a different strain of the flu. Oh, hurrah. He prescribed me some high-octane Robitussin-with-codeine and sent me on my way.

And...I'm still here, on the sofa, drinking tea, with a fever of 101.2. Still. After 4 freaking days. I am so SICK of being sick!

Good news? Well, we watched Stardust on Friday night...it was really good. I haven't read the book, but now I want to. I know from what I've heard that the book doesn't have a lot of...action per se, but that's okay, because it's a book. Movies, on the other hand, need something visual, and I think they did a good job with it. Also, I spent the entire movie going, "Hey, it's...!" I mean, everyone from Peter O'Toole to Mr. Weasley (as a goat!) to Henry Cavill and Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian! Eeee!) is in it, not to mention Sienna Miller, Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer in one of the best roles I've seen her in. Seriously, the only way the witch could have been any better is if she was played by Bernadette Peters, and, well, she's already done that.

Sigh...off to top off my teacup.
megotelek: (sweeney todd)
Ugh...I finally got what everyone's been coming down with - headache/sore throat/fever/congestion fun.

In other news, John & I went to see Sweeney Todd on Sunday...now, I wasn't familiar with the stage show at all, so I didn't have anything to compare it to. Having said that...

The worst pies in London )

Well, it's raining again. I hope my Buffy comics come today...I have #8, #9 and #10 coming...then I have to wait until February for the next one. How sad!
megotelek: (Default)
The concert was fantastic...I don't know why I wasn't expecting it, but there were lasers, fire and fireworks involved...and we got a Neil Peart drum solo! Complete with the rotating drum kit and every percussion instrument imaginable. If there were such a thing as a virtuoso drummer, Neil Peart would be it, I swear.

They did a lot of songs off the new album, Snakes & Arrows, but I liked them, so that was okay. And they used a South Park clip to introduce "Tom Sawyer" that was hilarious.

Okay, that's all for now, off to see the family!
megotelek: (dumbo magic feather)
Only 4 hours left until we'll be at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre for the Rush concert!

I'll try to take pictures of what I can, as soon as I finish pouting about the fact that I found out they won't be playing "Closer to the Heart" or "Time Stand Still". Oh well, maybe they'll have a totally new set list for Sacramento! Right...

In other news, we went to see The Simpsons Movie last weekend, and I embarrassed myself, I was laughing so hard. And, they showed a trailer for Stardust before it, which I now really want to see, and then get the book and read it. I've found, that if the movie based on a book has already come out, I can like both if I see the movie first, and then go get the book and read it. Jurassic Park, case in point.

ETA: Oh, I almost forgot - Feasting on Asphalt 2 premieres tonight on Food Network. Ah, I love TiVo so very, very much...
megotelek: (lorelaisurprise)
I can't believe I forgot to mention it, but Spoilerama! )

Sorry 'bout the cut, peoples, but I think I'll have an embargo on open book content until Monday...give people a chance who haven't read it to read it this weekend, and then all bets are off.
megotelek: (luna)
I got the book at midnight Friday - and haven't had a chance to devour it until last night. I stayed up until about 2 reading it - took me about 4 1/2 hours to do. Dad, I'll call you about your predictions, but here's what I've been able to sort out so far:

Major spoilers - if you read this, I warned you! )

After I reread, I’ll be in a better position to talk about it more, I think...
megotelek: (deadliest catch)
Wow...lots of stuff to talk about this time. First of all, I was playing the Deadliest Catch game on the Discovery Channel website...it's like Oregon Trail with crab! Although, you don't get to pick the actual crew members from the show...I was sad...I wanted to pick Edgar! There were some experienced girl deckhands and senior deckhands to pick from though, so that was nice. I made $200,000 my first time out - not bad for a greenhorn skipper!

This weekend was very movie-heavy...we went to see Live Free or Die Hard on Saturday, which was excellent. I mean, it's a Die Hard movie...you get tough-as-nails Bruce Willis John McClane, and his daughter, and stuff blows up. Do we really ask more than that? I don't think so. It was awesome.

Then, John and I hit the preview screening of Transformers on Monday night. I kind of delayed writing about it, because the only thing that came to mind yesterday was OMGSOCOOLTRANSFORMERS!!1! which really isn't the most articulate review I could give. I'm still not quite back to my adult self yet...I swear, I was an 8-year-old again in that theater. Surrounded by other 8-year-olds...and their Nintendo DSs and cell phones. We were sitting up high in the back, so we had this grand vista spread out before us of every type of electronic device one could possibly have. It was...kind of startling. And made me feel very old. And jellus...I want a toy! Again, 8 years old.

Ahem...where was I? Right, the movie. My only complaints were that there were a couple of jokes that really didn't need to be there and will prevent younger kids from being able to watch it. At least, if they have halfway responsible parents, it will. And, they didn't put the new theme song in the movie. It's the freaking theme song. Regardless of who liked it or didn't like it, the fact that it did, at least, have the original tune in there was a plus! I, personally, liked it. And it is on the soundtrack, so that's something.

Other than that, I was squealing with glee throughout the whole movie. I loved that they asked Peter Cullen to do the voice of Optimus Prime (he originally voiced him for the cartoon...I don't think anyone else has ever done that voice, come to think of it...) because it made it feel very authentic. Jon Voight was fantastic as the Secretary of Defense, and Shia LaBeouf was great in the lead. At one point during the movie, it finally hit me...he reminds me of a very young John Cusack. And, since I adore John Cusack, it worked for me!

From the forums over at TWoP:

...when she [Lorelai] saw that Emily had bought a house for L/L [Luke/Lorelai] she wasn't really against. Granted she also thought it wasn't going to happen, but she didn't get upset that Emily was trying to move her out of her beloved CS [CrapShack, what Lorelai said that she and Rory named their house, because they couldn't think of anything else]. Instead she was genuinely touched by Emily's gesture and generosity as well as listening when Emily was talking about how a man needs his own space. Plus we've seen that in L/C [Lorelai/Christopher] there isn't compromise. And we know that isn't Lorelai's strength, but she was starting to learn to compromise with Luke. Of course maybe's that cause Luke didn't just arbitrarily put her Pop-tarts back! Sorry. Remember the purple wallpaper and Lorelai telling Luke honestly that she wanted him to feel like he could do his own thing and he didn't have to always go along with her if he didn't want to.

Back to the episode at hand. I think Chris reacted to the letter as a love letter because it's the only way he knows how. It's been stated a lot that Chris is immature, and that's the truth. And Chris hasn't really ever thought of himself as a father. Even in Christopher Returns he says he wants to be "another pal for Rory." He thinks of himself as the man who loves Lorelai, and so he reacted to the letter as such. He doesn't know how to be angry at the revelation that he's a horrible dad, just a horrible significant other. And the flat screen, that's what Chris thinks is a great thing to do. Luke thinks a santa burger is a great thing to do. We know which one means more to Lorelai.

This is everything I wanted to say and what Jessica and I were silently growling about this WHOLE TIME! Good riddance, Chris! Although, I do hope Lorelai has some time by herself to figure things out and doesn't just go running to Luke. But from the previews, Cut for spoilers ) Ahhh...why do you suck me in, show?

In other news, Grey's Anatomy tonight! Burke proposed to Cristina! George proposed to Callie! Which will say yes (if either)? I'm hoping we get to see preparations for a Burke/Cristina wedding...so much fun Cristina planning. It'd be like Paris getting married on GG...so much fun!
megotelek: (potc savvy)
Yeah, yeah, it's been a while! So long, in fact, that I've now seen Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest three times in the theater. Three! Once with John, once with Jessica, and once with Jessica and Lisa. So each time, I was with someone who hadn't seen it!

And before the movie, we were treated to two trailers for movies I must see when they come out: Night at the Museum starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Owen Wilson. Yes, you read that right. Coming out this Christmas! And Transformers, a live action/CGI movie coming out 7/4/07 starring our very own Hasbro Transformers! Shut up, they were big when I was small!

Oh, speaking of things that were big when I was small...there's a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming out next year also...all CGI, from the look of it. Not sure how I feel about that one yet...

Anyway, on to the POTC review!

Spoilers ahoy! )

Sigh...off to listen to the music again!
megotelek: (beast swoon)
So.  Yeah.  We went to see the movie tonight.  And if you're planning on seeing it, YOU MUST STAY THROUGH THE CREDITS.  There is an added scene at the end of the credits that is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to watch.

Now that I have your attention.....I can't say anything specific about the movie!   I just....can't!  It was awful and wonderful.  Exhilarating and gut-wrenching.  I cried twice, once happy and once sad.  Well, the emotions were actually in reverse order, but still...

It's definitely not your typical action-popcorn-comic-book-movie at ALL.  But it is a very big story and everyone grows and learns and..knits together....and Kelsey Grammer is AWESOME as Beast!  *goes fangirly*  I have a new crush, ladies and gentlemen, and his name is Beast.  Or Dr. Hank McCoy (SEE?  He's even Dr. McCoy!!!) *fangirliness over...for now...*   Sigh.

So, bottom line, STAY THROUGH THE CREDITS.  You'll thank me!
megotelek: (youngwizards)
Just a little itty bit of linkspam.  Diane Duane, author of my mostest belovedest Young Wizards series of books, is going to online-publish by subscription the third book in her Feline Wizardry series.  They're set in the same universe as the Young Wizard books but center on a group of cat-wizards...oh, just

go here

for a full summary and description of everything.  And subscribe, if you feel like it!  We need to keep the Young Wizards alive!  Aliiiive, I say!

Oh wow...I just realized that I probably read the first book in this series when I was...12?  13?  So at least 10 years ago.  And the newest one, Wizards At War, just came out last summer, which I promptly went out and bought the day it was released on hardcover.  Yes, I am that in love with this series.
megotelek: (black hole)
So, we went to see the midnight showing of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe the day it opened. And I was...trying to restrain myself from getting too excited. After all, I am usually disappointed in movies based on books. And this book was one I had read so many times starting in early childhood, and love so much, that it was hard to not get too excited.

And then...it started. And it was incredible. I honestly don't have the words to describe it, except that it was the book! It was everything from the book, everything I loved! And done so beautifully, that I do believe I cried several times. When Lucy first stumbles into Narnia, when the children encounter Father Christmas, Aslan's sacrifice and the mice nibbling at the cords, the list goes on and on! Jim Broadbent was remarkable as Professor Kirke, and the children were just wonderful. I loved how their characters were fleshed out and they became more real. It was just...incredible. I can't wait to go see it again!! And the soundtrack comes out tomorrow...which I also desperately want!

And now, a little linkspam:

Stan 'Tookie' Williams was denied clemency by Governor Arnold Schwarzennegger. And I breathe a sigh of relief. Hmm, let's see...he murdered 4 people directly and caused the deaths of hundreds (if not thousands) more by co-founding the Crips (one of the most notorious LA street gangs), but he wrote a couple of children's books on death row so we should let him out of his lawful jury-decided punishment? Uh, no.

Want to win a Nobel Prize? Show the world how much you hate America. That's right, folks! That shiny Nobel can be yours for the right amount of venom against the greatest country on Earth. I have no words. But the author of this article does, and uses them beautifully.

Ok, so I deleted the episode. Luckily, here's TWoP's recap of the episode! Yay! Enjoy!
megotelek: (lorelai)

Gilmore Girls, yay!  This week was mostly a meh, filler episode, but it looks like we're setting up exciting things!

Whoa, whoa, Sookie, don’t do math! You know that hurts your head! )

Next week: There's some sort of party involving '40s period costume, both Rory and Paris are decked out, and confrontations between the elder Gilmores and the elder Huntzbergers.  Best line from Richard, exclaiming that Lorelai was right about everything she told them!  Also implies that the sole reason Rory dropped out was Mitchum's comments.  Not really a surprise, but still...so disappointed in Rory.  Hopefully Paris will pound on her a little.

Okay, now that I've seen the movie twice, it's time to review. The first time around, we missed a 10 minute chunk while I dragged John to the bathroom with me (the drive-in's bathroom looks like it hasn't been touched since the 50s, and there's just something about toilets without stalls in the women's room that skeeves me out a little), but that was filled in last night. We'll start with overall impressions, and then I'll go into detail under the cut.

This was the best movie I've seen in a while. It was complete, cohesive, and very real. Yes, I already knew these characters from Firefly, but the backstory and exposition is done subtly and well to catch up the rest of the audience. There's action, but not just for the sake of action, there's some very cool CGI shots, and the story is executed flawlessly. The audience laughed, cried, and applauded in all the right spots -- any movie that can make guys shamelessly tear up has to be good, right? Right. Ok, now we'll get into more details.

SPOILERS )

I was basically shaking when we left the theater, it was so emotional. But it was a great movie. Not a popcorn action sci-fi movie...a mystery/drama that just happens to be set 500 years in the future. Great movie. I can't think of words that mean enough to encompass what it was. But it'll be a while before I can watch it again, just for the emotional impact. Maybe when it comes out on DVD. Hopefully sooner.

I'm so excited!  I got my sample imps from BPAL today and couldn't wait to test them out!  So here are my initial thoughts and reviews:

Gilmore Girls!  Hurrah!  I'm tired, so here's the recap:

Wow, TJ must be missing some of the same chromosomes as Kirk! Although, he hasn’t been naked yet, so I guess that falls under the category of small kindnesses. )

Next week: Sookie asks Lorelai and Rory to be godmothers to her children, and apparently after not speaking for months, they fight in church and refuse to renounce Satan.  See you all next week!

megotelek: (lorelai)

So, week two of the Gilmore Girls Tuesday night club opened with a bang.  We browsed around in Elizabeth's new TiVo, and found the best one-line description of a movie ever.  The movie's called Trust, and the description is as follows: "Pregnant high school dropout falls for moody genius who carries a hand grenade, just in case."  It is apparently a romantic comedy, and got three stars!  We can't wait to watch it next week!  Anyway, on with the recap...

Hole…dirt…bad dirt…hole! )

Next week: Rory becomes the gossip queen of the DAR, and while everyone is pressing Luke and Lorelai to set a date, Lorelai doesn’t want to until everything is right with Rory.  That’s right, lots and lots of drama!
